Biographical/Historical Note:
The Civic Orchestra of Chicago was founded by then Chicago Symphony Orchestra Music Director Frederick Stock in 1919. It presents free public concerts and sponsors music education programs.

Scope and Content Note:
A collection of scores by black composers submitted for a competition for black composers in 1991. The four winning compositions were performed at a concert by the Civic Orchestra on April 4, 1992.
